Riverside County firefighters deal with the wreckage of a helicopter Sunday in Cabazon.
All three people aboard a firefighting helicopter were killed when it collided with a plane in midair as the two planes battled a fire in Riverside County, emergency officials said. .
The second chopper landed safely after Sunday’s crash, Southern Cal Fire Chief David Fulcher told a news conference Monday morning.
Fulcher identified the three dead as a Cal Fire Department chief, a Cal Fire captain and a helicopter pilot, according to the Associated Press.
Video from Riverside County shows the burned area, and nearby, what appears to be debris from a chopper on a hill near where the brush was burned. Wreckage remains nearby, on the road, and a helicopter was not visible in the dark skies of the crash site Sunday morning.
It is not clear whether the area burned from the fire that brought the area or the damage.
For several hours, authorities did not release information about the injured. But on Sunday evening, a KABC-TV reporter on the scene reported that authorities told him at least one person had died.
From the beginning, the involvement of one or two companies in the event was confused. In some cases, media reports and social media have shown a plane crash but the cause of the collision with a plane that has already been confirmed to have gone down is unknown.
Cal Fire is working on an as-needed basis, according to KCAL-TV. According to reports, officials from the traffic control department have already reached the spot.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department issued a preliminary statement on the accident.
At 7:20 p.m., “members responded to the area of Pipeline Road and Apache Trail in #Cabazon in reference to a wind problem,” the office said. “Airplane 1 flies there. Until now, the circle around the disaster is not known.”
