The Indian Premier League (IPL) (also known as TATA IPL for sponsorship purposes) is a men's Twenty20 (T20) cricket tournament held annually in India. Ten teams are competing in seven cities and three states of India. The league was established by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2007. Brijesh Patel is the president of the IPL. The Indian Cricket League (ICL) was formed in 2007, with sponsorship from Zee Entertainment Corporation. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) or the International Cricket Council (ICC) do not recognize the ICL and the BCCI does not want board members to join the ICL governing body. To prevent the players from participating in the ICL, the BCCI has increased the amount of prize money in their domestic matches and also imposed a ban on the players from participating in the ICL, which is expected to attract rebels from the agency.


On 13 September 2007,  following India's victory in the 2007 T20 World Cup, the BCCI announced a Twenty20 cricket tournament called the Indian Premier League. The first phase was launched in April 2008, at a "big event" in New Delhi. BCCI vice-president Lalit Modi, who led the IPL campaign, revealed details about the tournament including its structure, prize money, revenue structure and rules of the association. Sahara Adventure Sports Group bought the Pune franchise for $370 million and Rendezvous Sports World bought the Kochi franchise for $333.3 million.  However, a year later, on 11 November 2011, it was announced that the Kochi Tuskers Kerala side would be disbanded after violating BCCI rules.

The IPL headquarters is located in the Cricket Center near the Wankhede Stadium in Churchgate, Mumbai. The IPL Governing Council is responsible for all activities including organizing the tournament.
